WAY behind--Time to get caught up

Since my last blog on August 24 my life has been a total rat race. I can't even begin to tell you all the things I have done with my time. It makes me tired to think about it.

In the past I have been thinking of my blog as a means to journal the activities in my life. I plan to continue that idea.

However, I have added a more fun aspect to my life. I am determined to create a Digital Scrap Book page for each event in the life of my family, beginning with the first day of school this year and continuing for a year. Now that is a trick in itself since everyone in my family starts to school on a different day. So for this year it "SORT OF" begins with the first day of school (mid-August)...that is when I had the idea. It has been fun and hilarious at times. When I find out about an event I make a note. When I find a new page idea I make a note. I try to bond the two together somehow. An event does not have to be a school event just an event that touches the family in one way or the other.

As I sit writing this I just bonded a new technique that I learned this morning with the latest event that I want to scrap book. It will have to wait until tomorrow...I need to leave now for a meeting/Fellowship/BSF. I will be late returning home tonight but I know what I will be doing first thing in the morning.

So for now...

My Heart is Still Racing!

A little after 6:00 am my dogs began barking...the bark that tells me something is my yard. I am trying to shh them because Brian and Lisa are still asleep. Well not any more here comes Sarge. I didn't see anything...so I open the door to let them out to go to the bathroom. Well they all raced to the corner of the house. I knew there was something. I began moving things. Still nothing. Then I began to take the cover off Brian & Lisa's grill. Bingo. The dogs were after it. They caught it. An opossum...body and head close to 12". By now Brian is on the scene. He is trying to get the dogs to go away and leave it alone. I went for a shovel. I was going to kill it and then I lost my nerve and handed the shovel to Brian. He will never let me live that down. Some how some way we nearly lost it. The dogs were on it again. Brian was trying to break it's neck without leaving blood all over my patio. He decided he needed a different type of shovel. I found one with a serrated edge. He stopped playing possum and started flaying his legs. Brian out lasted him. Then we put him in a garbage bag and squashed all the air out and wound it up tight. Then we put that bundle into another garbage bag and did the same thing. Then we put that bundle in the garbage can with the lid secured tightly. If there is any fight left he will suffocate.

My heart is still racing. I lost my nerve because I was afraid that I would go for him with the shovel and miss and he would attack me. When Brian started teasing me about loosing my nerve. I told him he could have that one. I admitted I lost my nerve.

No, Vickie, there are no pictures, but Brian, Lisa and I were all there on the scene. You just have to take our word for it.

July 4-10, 2010

July 4, 2010
Well some of the family got together for hamburgers and hot dogs and cake. You will have to read Cindie's blog about the cake, I can't tell it as well as she tells it. Zach roped his dad, Moose and Brian into a game of horseshoes. We went to see the DAC fireworks at our regular family place--Burger King parking lot. There were other church members there so we had a good time.

July 5, 2010
Extended July 4th...some had to work, some did not so it just turned into a goof off day. I can't think of a single constructive thing I did. I had dinner with Judy, Jim, Gena. After supper I went to Judy's and we watched a movie.

July 6, 2010
Mike and Moose continued the work on my yard/foundation improvements.

July 7, 2010
Church, which means church history work whether home or at church plus the evening activities--Bible study, snacks, fellowship. Except this week I had to skip Bible study for a committee meeting. I hate that. I now have a computer in my office at church, but I don't know the password.

July 8, 2010
Dentist. Stuff. Forever Young Dinner/Meeting...our program was based on the history of the USO. That was quite interesting.

July 9, 2010
Breakfast with Olive and Charles. Lunch with NMHS teachers. Games and snacks with church friends...I think that is called all-day-party.

July 10, 2010
Lewallyn wedding is all that is planned for the day.

That's all Folks! Until later!

What Happened to June?

June 13, 2010
Left, riding on a bus, for Savannah, Ga. Spent the week with church friends absorbing the history of a beautiful city. I said absorbing, I did not say that I absorbed all of the history. There is so much more to see. The trip was loaded with History, Heat, and Humidity; as well as Food, Fellowship and Fun!

I had begun reading the Savannah quartet by Eugenia Price. I had read the first book and was into the second book before we left. I knew some of the history I wanted to see. It is a very lovely city. They have done a great job of preserving their history. Some of the historical buildings were destroyed before the ladies of Savannah put their foot down and said, "NO MORE, we are not going to destroy any more of our history." The bulldozers were stopped; AND some of what was destroyed has been restored/replicated. I want to go back and see all the things I did not see while we were there.

FOOD...I think that was the theme for the week. We did our best to follow the theme. Breakfast was at the hotel every morning and anything you could ever want to eat was on the buffet. We ate at Sticky Fingers (Bar-B-Que), Paula Deen's restaurant, Uncle Bubba's restaurant, on a Riverboat cruise, at The River House restaurant. The two meals where we ate own our own--one of them was fast food for a good reason, the other was along Bay Street in another restored building. Every where we ate was in a restored building of one type or another except the river boat.

Some of us went the first afternoon to the 8th Air Force Museum. It was a little way out of Savannah and due to the time frame we grabbed fast food on the way to the museum (the ones who did not go to the museum, well who knows what they ate or did). Along with everything else we could have used more time in the museum.

As always with a tour group there are pros and cons: (1) con: there is never enough time to see everything you want to see, (2) pro: we do get a GOOD overview of the area, (3) a big PRO: we often skip the long lines to get into an establishment and/or we can get into an establishment when others can not. Example: Individual people wanting to eat at Paula Deen's restaurant have to go early in the morning, stand in long lines to get a reservation for later in the day. As a group with pre-purchased group tickets we did not have to stand in line at all.

We went to Tybee Island which is off the coast of Savannah. We toured Fort Pulaski which was a well built and well preserved fort from the very early days in Savannah. We also saw the museum and the Lighthouse Station on Tybee Island, another well preserved and/or restored/being restored part of history. You can go up in the lighthouse, but it is 178 steps of pure heat on a very hot day, so it was not a good choice for the day. One of our group who is in excellent physical condition did go up and was quite hot by the time they were back on the ground. You could not take water with you on this little trek.

While we were on the Riverboat Cruise we saw another of Savannah's forts--Fort Jackson. It is right on the water. Interesting! We did not get to go in this fort. While we were on the cruise we saw other parts of Savannah that we could not see from the shore. We also saw the skyline at night, plus a magnificent sun set over the river. One of our group kept us entertained with stories from previous travels.

We returned on June 19, 2010.

June 20 to July 3, 2010

Laundry, goof-off and a lot of time spent on church history and church library work. I did get a new perm, a massage, and a pedicure.

How is that for a two-week period of time of doing a of total nothing. Oh well, it was fun.

Tomorrow is July 4, 2010 and a few of us will get together for family food and fun time. After that I will try to be more productive so that I have something to write about.

JUNE 2010

June started with me on the run...appointments, regular day to day stuff, fun stuff, sad stuff, grandchildren stuff, and the list goes on and on.

Attended MCT Black Box Theater. The program was a concert/medley of Rogers & Hammerstein musicals. It was fun...I was with friends, the program was great, and we were all trying to place each song with which musical.

Attended a funeral.

Attended FYC program...the first night program of the summer. The dinner was fish with all the trimmings. The program was Don & Trent Blackley. Dinning room was FULL to over flowing. What more could any one want? Great evening!

HIGHLIGHT...answer to prayer...Shelby is headed to Texas A&M when school starts...Woo Hoo, Whoop, Gig 'em.

Zach has a baseball playoff game tonight.

Various grand kids are at various camps...campers, or leaders. Some of them will be home Saturday. Others are camp leaders for the summer. Miss the grand kids when they are away for whatever reason.

Lisa and I have been sort of laid back this week...we have only had one Blizzard, but we are hoping to find time to have another one.

Wedding on schedule for Saturday.

Sunday--church. After church, Paula Dean here I come.

That's All Folks...Tune in Next Time!

May 25 - 31, 2010

Always Behind! On May 26 I attempted to get caught up, but I didn't and now I am even further behind. What is it they say about retirement...don't know how you ever got anything done before retirement...something like that. Well, my rebutal to that is I am doing what I want to do, if I want to do it, when I want to do it--I set my own deadlines. However, none of that is totally true. What is true is that I am having fun, I have choices and deadlines these days and they don't include TAKS testing.
May 24...
Sr Adult Choir practice , baked cookies, Sr Adult Choir party.
May 25...
Watched two ball games in the evening--Jeremiah Martinez's T-Ball game and Zach's Baseball game.
May 26...
Retired teachers meeting, Church History work, Children's Choir Musical at church about the Ten Commandments.
May 27...
Total Blur--maybe I didn't do anything.
May 28...
Sr Adult Game Day at the church, lunch, helped decorate for Patrick's Sr. Party, attended the party, helped clean up after party, fell into bed. Vickie, Donnie, Kristen arrived for the party/weekend.
May 29...
1:00 pm attended Patrick's Graduation...lunch/supper/games at the Dillard's
May 30...
Church, lunch/afternoon at the Dillard's, supper/movie with Brian, Lisa, and Kristen. Vickie & Donny joined Scott and Carolyn for a typical Benk/Mac "All Nighter".
May 31...
MEMORIAL DAY...chilled out (sort of) with Vickie, Donnie, Kristen, Lisa, Brian...Brian worked part of the day, the rest of us did piddling things. V, D, K left early afternoon for Houston. Brian & Lisa went to their regular Bible Study. I had a doggie disaster. The dogs managed to push the gate open and Oscar escaped. I caged Sarge and Scooter and went looking for Oscar who remained aloof until Brian & Lisa came home and pranced in with them as though that was a normal thing to do.

END Of MAY 2010!

May 19 - 24, 2010

OH NO, I am behind again...

May 19...
  • Loaded up my car with all the goodies I had been collecting for the Senior (12th graders) All-Nighter.
  • Went to Walmart to pick up the drinks for the Senior All-Nighter...I was supposed to go later with Olive, but it was threatening to rain and I did not want to have to do that project in the rain. No we did not get rain after all.
  • Went to church...unloaded the drinks and all the other stuff in my car...stashed it in the senior closet.
  • Started work in the History Office
  • Other Senior All-Nighter goodies began to arrive...in my office.
  • After all the goodies were at church and locked up I went to lunch with Geri and Fran.
  • After lunch transferred the goodies from my office to senior closet...project completed.
  • Worked on history
  • Ate supper
  • Bible Study
  • Home
  • Fell into bed
May 20...
Left the church with the senior adults to go on a Mystery Trip...we went to the Old Red Museum. They/someone has refurbished the Old Red Courthouse into a museum of Dallas County from its beginning to 2007. There were originally 4 courtrooms on the second floor, each courtroom hold 1/4 of the Dallas history, across from the original wrought iron Grand Stairway there is an area that was probably once offices that has been turned into the Crystal Charity Ball Children's Education Center. This is a magnificent museum...very well done. After the museum we had lunch at the Original El Fenix in downtown Dallas...of course it was pouring rain as we were ready to leave the restaurant, but none of us melted. It was a lovely day. Mystery Trips are good.

I got home just as Brian and Lisa and Sarge were leaving to go to Birmingham to close on their house and move their remaining possessions to Dallas.

May 21...
Senior All-Nighter. Zach spent the night with me.

May 22...
Just me and Zach...took the dogs to the groomer...baked cookies...picked dogs up from the groomer...cooked Mac and Cheese and Spam for me and Zach and Cindie...Cindie was beat she was one of the leaders for the Senior All-Nighter...not as young as she used to be.

May 23...
Sunday...Senior Breakfast...Senior Speaker and video of the seniors life...Worship Service...Lunch...evening Worship Service...home.

The Ice Cream Scoop!

I forgot one very amusing thing that happened yesterday.

Brian asked if he could use the Ice Cream Spoon to dip something else...other than ice cream. I said yes. Now you have to remember that the Ice Cream Spoon has been around for ever, the handle is broken, but it is sturdy enough to scoop ice cream without bending it. I suppose it is all the grand kids know at my house.

Lisa said Mee Maw I have been thinking about buying you a real Ice Cream Scoop.

My reply was that I really think I remember buying an Ice Cream Scoop. We got to looking and actually found a real Ice Cream Scoop in one of the kitchen drawers.

Well Brian really went into orbit. He was so excited. You would have thought I had just handed him the world on a golden platter. He even added that it was a really good one. I am sure I got it at Walmart.

It really takes "so much" to make grand kids happy. They are all so special. Love them all.

May 10 - 18, 2010

My times flies when we are having fun!

Monday, May 10--Pop Choir Rehearsal
Wednesday, May 12--Work at church, supper, Bible Study
Friday, May 14--Forever Young Club in the morning, work on project in the afternoon, rain

Now that certainly doesn't sound like much but I do know that every minute between all of these events had to fall into place correctly or I would have never finished anything. I can tell you that I finished the project and and checked everything off the list. Just don't ask me what was on the list. I can't remember, I just know it is done.

Lisa left town Thursday morning, Brian and I survived, Spencer came into town Friday evening.

Saturday, May 15--Spencer went to College Station. I went with Cindie and Mike to College Station to see the Corp of Cadets Final Review for 2010. It was also Josh's last Corp event--the end of his four years in the Corp. It was the beginning of Spencer's fourth year in the Corp. All-in-all it was a very special occasion. Then all the family present went to eat, after that four cars headed to Dallas. This family makes every event special, exciting, hilarious, and/or whatever. Nothing is ever boring. Vickie and Donny left for Houston...by themselves, with no children in tow. Josh and Jenny were in the lead car to Dallas, followed by Mike, Virginia, and Zack in one car, then Heather was driving Spencer's truck with Patrick as a passenger, bringing up the rear was Cindie, Shelby, Me and Spencer who was dead asleep. We kept H & P in the middle since they were the youngest and most inexperienced drivers. H & P decided about 40 miles out of Mesquite to change drivers. No big deal we probably all needed a break. Arrived my house...H & S grabbed a blanket, pillow and a couch and crashed. I was right behind them, put my head on my pillow at 2:30 am Sunday morning.

Sunday, May 16--Got H & S up, fed them a waffle, and sent them on their way to Arkansas for the summer. Went to church, then a quick rest, then Baccalaureate for P, then rest, then church, then to bed for the night. It was a full day! (Lisa came home sometime but I didn't see her until the next morning.)

Monday, May 17--Pop Choir Performance at Christian Care Center, ran errands, and chilled.

Tuesday, May 18--More projects, more errands. Trying to get things in order for the beginning of another whirlwind of activities for the remainder of the week and the remainder of the month.

I keep reminding myself that I LOVE THE MONTH OF MAY.

Mother's Day

Wow is it already May 9th, Mother's Day...what happened between my last post on April 24th and today?

Well several things happened:
  • April 26-30--TAKS week for public schools and some family members...5 grandchildren taking TAKS test and three children administering the TAKS test.
  • April 26-30--Yard work...Patrick and I (he didn't have to take the TAKS test)...I am trying to improve the condition of my yard. Over the last few years it has begun to deteriorate and look drab. I am determined to improve that situation.
  • April 30--Shelby's 20th birthday...where was she, taking a college class all weekend.
  • April 28--Retired Teacher's meeting...part of the program included information about the Brickyard Cemetery Preservation Project. Very few people in Mesquite even know that there ever was a Black Community in our city. It was moving away about the time I moved to Mesquite, but I knew about it and about where it was located, but not much more. I am glad they are trying to preserve the cemetery.
  • May 3--BSF Introduction for next year...I have completed all the Bible Study Fellowship courses up to this point, but next year there will be a new study-on the Book of Isaiah--and I am planning to attend, but before you can attend you have to attend an introduction and enrollment session.
  • May 4--Voting for local stuff...City Council, DCCCD board members, etc. I am convinced now more than ever that informed voting is absolutely necessary, and I intend to do my part. Sometimes I may be voting against a candidate, but that is important also.
  • May 5--Lighthouse Award Program for Patrick...the entire faculty from Principal to Security Guard is included. Each person chooses a student who has made an impression on that faculty member. The student is presented a certificate, a lapel pin, a picture of the two of them. The program consists of 3 of the chosen students making a speech regarding their plight in life and how they have overcome obstacles to get to where they are today.
  • May 5--Korean Children Choir at our church...such a treat. These were students of the approximate 4th - 6th grade age range (maybe a couple or 7th-8th grade range). They were polite, well organized, and very talented. They sang and choreographed songs (Patriotic and Hymns) in English and Korean. They wore two performance uniforms during the program-formal wear and native wear. They also had a traveling uniform-black skirts and slacks with white blouses and shirts. They ate dinner in our dinning hall with all of us and they were wearing their formal wear (pink dresses and black tuxes). They visited with our kids as our kids came by the table, but they never left their table. They were not running all over the dinning hall. They left the dinning hall in single file to prepare for the concert. After the program they left the choir suite in their traveling uniform, in single file, carrying their own uniform bags headed straight for the bus. However, they were all smiles and told us all good bye as they passed us in the hall.
  • May 6--Singing Men of Texas Concert...composed of men in the North Texas area who are Ministers of Music in a church, retired from a church, or on staff in a Christian College, or somehow connected to Christian music leadership. These men were scheduled to go on a singing mission trip to the Ukraine, but the volcanic ash from the erupting volcano in Iceland delayed their trip until October 2010. Their repertoire included two numbers in Russian. By October they will be singing a new repertoire of new music, but they will still sing their Russian numbers in the Ukraine.
  • May 8--Mother's Day dinner with Larry, Brenda, Jordan, Courtney, Hunter...because there are so many variables in Larry's family they decided to celebrate Mother's day for Brenda and I on Saturday night. We went to a place called Fish City. Excellent food.
Well now I am tired just thinking over the activities since the last post.

When I look forward to the remainder of May and on into June it looks about the same

Pollen-Allergies-Sinus Infection

Not my favorite week...woke up Sunday morning with a sore throat...just thought I had gotten too hot or too cold in the night. Monday sneezing, coughing. Tuesday went to doctor. Wednesday thought I would curl up and die...didn't even go to church...that is bad. Thursday began to feel human again. Friday out of the house a little bit only to realize that the pollen is so severe...you can smell it.

Lisa has been out of town all week...Brian and I have held the fort down. We went to eat fish on Tuesday and Thursday...Lisa is allergic to fish so we were catching up while she has been out of town.

I have been quite lazy this week...not sure I have done anything productive. Saturday's plans are to go to Vocal Majority Concert this afternoon with friends. Lisa will be back tonight. I guess tomorrow, Sunday, I will try to pull myself together and begin a normal week...I have plenty of things to do.

Weekend

Friday, April 16, 2010

A most wonderful day.

Went with Sam and Geneva and Judy to the Norvell Slater Hymn Sing at Dallas Baptist University. As we drive onto the campus, beauty was every where. The buildings all look like they had just been moved in from Williamsburg, VA. The campus is clean and the flowers are out of this world. Then we enter the NEW Pilgrim Chapel...unbelievable beauty...the entrance was lovely anti bellum style. We were met by the grand daughter of Joanne and Bill. Such a lovely young lady. We were directed to our front row seats...you see we were there to help honor Geneva for her years of service as organist in various capacities on the campus. The program began with an organ, piano, organ/piano concert. As we listened to such great music we absorbed the beautiful organ and its pipes, the stained glass windows, the scripture verses on the beams overhead, the seating (which looked like church pews but the seats were plush theater seats). The program began with pledges and songs as we did them in VBS days, continued with quartet music, presentations, and with hymns interspersed through out the entire program. After the program, there was a reception in another beautiful room overlooking a lake, with carpet on the floor patterned after the carpeting in the White House in Washington DC.

After we arrived back in Mesquite, Judy and I continued on to meet another group for dinner and a play. Enjoyed the dinner and fellowship with those friends. The play was not one of our favorites.

Arrived home to fall into the bed for a great night's sleep.

Senior Adult Luncheon at our church.

Each year the youth of our church honor the senior adults with a luncheon and a program.

Well, I do believe this year was the best. Good food, good entertainment. The youth were at their best. Our new Youth Minister was wonderful!

This afternoon has been a fairly lazy afternoon.

Well it is off to another night of sleep.

A Day in the Archives at STBC

By now everyone knows that I am spending Wednesdays at the church working on the history archives.

Yesterday was full of exciting, interesting, and unique things.
  • I found pictures of people that I had long ago forgotten, even a picture of me when I was a few pounds lighter.
  • I found pictures that I had never seen before and when I showed them to other people they had never seen them either. These were the various stages of buildings at STBC.
  • I found a charcoal painting of the proposed look of the "current" plant with the proposed new sanctuary. HOWEVER, the proposed/current sanctuary was not built as it was originally planned.
  • I found out that the first architect of the current sanctuary thought we had a symmetrical lot and went bankrupt trying to figure out why his plans were not fitting the lot.
  • I found floor plans of one of the buildings. Even though there was no date on the paper I found I can tell from the Sunday School terminology that it dated back quite a few years. The pastor's name that was on the paper helps to set the time also.
  • I walked the halls trying to find where one building connected to another building.
  • I had a guided tour of the current plant and I was shown all the crooks and crannies of joining buildings together and remodeling buildings along the way.
  • The current pastor came in and was looking at the pictures and I showed him the sequence of the buildings. I think he thought it was all one big building built at one time. Someone dropped the ball and did not explain that to him. He was looking at an ariel few of the current buildings. He pointed to one building and asked "What is this building?". I explained the purchase of the Episcopal property and the many uses of their sanctuary and that the building in question no longer existed.
It was a fun day!

One Full Weekend

Forever Young Meeting

I went to Forever Young Meeting at the church. This is a senior citizen get together every month with fellowship, program and lunch. It is not limited to the membership of our church so we have made friends and continue to make new friends from all over the area. Fellowship begins at 10:00 am--we recognize birthdays and anniversaries--we listen to announcements of up coming events. Our program for today's meeting was presented by one of the docents from the Dallas Arboretum. The Arboretum is a large acreage along the coast of White Rock Lake which was donated by several families to the city of Dallas. The displays are magnificent and plans for future are surreal. Following the program we had a meal of ham, sweet potatoes, broccoli, salad and desert. There is usually fellowship after wards, but I left to attend another event.

The Signing

I left the church and drove to Poteet High School, Mesquite, Texas. I met family and friends in the library to watch Patrick (grandchild #10) sign a letter of commitment with Howard Payne University to play football beginning the the fall of 2010. Howard Payne is in Brownwood, Texas. Patrick is lovingly called Moose by his friends and family. As a high school senior he is approximately 6'4" and weighs approximately 300 lbs. Unfortunately his days in high school football were undesirable--the team had been a loosing team for 8 consecutive years. However, he had some wonderful coaches along the years, they just were not the head coach and most of them left for different venues where their efforts were used to greater extent than they were at PHS. Patrick kept up with these coaches and continued to attend summer camps under the leadership of these coaches. So we are looking forward to Patrick enjoying HPU both spiritually, academically, and athletically. One of these coaches is still at PHS and was able to attend the signing with Patrick. This coach is a good coach, good teacher, and has been good for Patrick.

State Bible Drill Competition

Leaving the signing and returning to the church I helped set up the rooms for the children and youth from around the state to participate in the State Bible Drill competition. After that I registered the churches and children as they arrived.

This event was the State level for children which means it was the end of their year of memorizing scripture and scripture references and being able to locate them in the Bible, read them after locating them or quoting them from memory. They will take a few months off and then resume in September at a grade level higher than this year preparing for State Competition this time next year.

For junior high and high school students who participate in Bible Drill and Speaker's tournament the event was the Regional Level. Their next event will be in three weeks at the BGCT (Baptist General Convention of Texas) headquarters in Dallas. The winners for that even will then participate in the National event in Nashville, Tennessee.

After all the churches were registered in I was able to leave my post to go and listen/watch my youngest grand son Zachary as he participated in this competition for the first time. They have to be in the 4th grade to be able to participate.

The closing event for the day was exciting to see the children excited for their achievements and the achievements for their friends.

SATURDAY, APRIL 10, 2010

State Bible Drill Competition resumed with children from other churches in the area.

Following the closing events for the day I helped pack up supplies and meet with the people responsible for next year's event regarding room locations, and additional activities for next year.

End of an Icon

Got up early dressed for church early so I would have time to watch the implosion of Texas Stadium. The stadium was the first home of the Dallas Cowboys and a major icon in Dallas and Texas. It had reached the point in it's life where repairs were prohibitive money wise. So the decision was made several months ago (after the new home for the Dallas Cowboys was completed and the team moved to the new location) to implode the building and use the grounds for another type of activity. The news anchors were on hand at 6:30 for memories then at 7:00 there was an impressive fireworks display. At 7:10 the switch was pushed to begin the end of a major icon. A child 11 years old was chosen to push the switch because of his efforts with the homeless people in the Dallas area.

Church

As usual the church services were very uplifting.

After Church

One of my long time friends and I began talking. Then we began to move our conversation to a restaurant. All together we talked for 3 hours. Can you tell that we have not had time lately to catch each other up on our family happenings?

Leisure afternoon watching the Masters Golf Tournament with a grand son. That was different.

Church tonight.

As I said in the beginning--One Full Weekend.

Oppossum

This morning as I sat typing, the dogs went crazy. I had just fed them and they were still in their cages (I have to cage them while they eat to keep them from eating each other's food). Side note: These dogs consist of a Sarge, a Boston Terrier, Scooter, a wire haired Daschound, and Oscar an short haired old Daschound--just vision that. I went to let them out. As I let them out they went straight toward the side of the house but still on the patio. Just as I started to shut the door I did a double take. There was a opossum on the patio between the house wall and a small table I keep for grilling supplies. I was barefoot and not about to go after any animal with out shoes, so I shut the door and went for my shoes and a shovel that was beside the door in the house. By the time I got back to the scene of the crime they had "killed" the opossum. Well, I knew from a previous experience Vickie and I had that he might not be dead, just playing "possum".

First I had to decide what to do with him and second I had to make the dogs leave him alone long enough for me to do whatever I wanted to do. I looked around trying to make up my mind when I spotted an empty charcoal bag in my yard. I put the possum in the bag and folded the bag down tight and put the bag in the garbage can that stays outside. I was going to take the garbage bag to the ally, but it was too heavy. So I made sure the lid was on the can very securely.

I posted a statement on Face Book, primarily for Brian's benefit so that he would put the garbage out for me tonight. Then I went on with my plans for the day and forgot about the whole ordeal, until Brian got home. When he walked in the door I asked if he had seen the Face Book post. He laughed and told me he had just seen it before he and Lisa went somewhere.

Brian and I went to the patio and took the charcoal bag out of the garbage can. Nothing in the bag wiggled so Brian dumped the contents on the patio. There was more charcoal in the bag than I realized. The possum was well coated in charcoal and had probably suffocated, if he was not already dead before I put him in the bag. Then we put him back in the charcoal bag and back in the garbage bag and Brian disposed of the whole mess. Lisa thought Brian and I were gross for playing with a dead possum.

His body was about 8" long so he was just a baby. That means that I will probably see more of the little critters as time goes on.

A year or so ago my dogs (Sarge is Brian's dog) killed one and then we thought they had killed another, but he just played possum long enough to get away. This past fall my dogs were going crazy and I looked outside only to see an adult opossum (probably the mom) walking along the top of my fence. So I guess she has gone and had another batch--just so my dogs along with Sarge--could have entertainment.

I live in the city. I should not be privleged with this kind of excitement. But I am. That was my excitement for today.

Spain 2010 Pictures

Here are all of my Spain pictures if you are bored and need something to do. LOL! They are just pictures of the events in Spain. I have not put them in scrap book format. I did delete the bad ones.

Spring Break Trip

I am home from a very interesting trip--interesting good, interesting bad/sad, interesting-the list goes on.

The things we saw in Spain were very interesting, informative, intriguing, historical, unbelievable as much of Europe can be. As I look back at the pictures, I realize that we crammed a lot of education into one short week.

The tour director(s) did not know that people could walk/stroll (see and absorb things) so she had us "running" every where we went, therefore it was very grueling physically, even for some of the younger ones on the trip.

The worst and most stressful part of the trip was the PROFESSIONAL Pick Pockets. Pick pocket attempts on 3 of our men were foiled without any damage. However, another one of our men was left in Spain due to the fact that Pick Pockets got everything he had, money, credit cards, hotel key, and last but not least his Passport. As a former police officer and a current Police Science Instructor he knew all the right things to do--copies of everything in a separate location from the things he lost. He just had to wait for the American Embassy to open Monday morning so he could get a Temporary Passport so he could fly out of Spain. He was actually able to fly out on Tuesday.

Our trip Itinerary was changed for Friday, Saturday, and Sunday due to the British Airways strike. The tour company rearranged the Fri and Sat we were to spend in Barcelona and we crammed all the important things into Friday. Saturday we flew out of Spain into London so we would already be in London on Sunday instead of trying to make connecting flights on Sunday which probably would not have happened. They also added a city bus tour of London and another "running" night tour. We actually flew out of Spain on a different airline. We were able to fly out of London "as scheduled" on Sunday. We were delayed about an hour while they put together a flight crew for our flight.

To sum it up...I am glad I went to Spain, but I will not be returning to Spain.

One more thing. I think all of us headed to the closest TEX-MEX place between DFW and home to eat some "REAL" food. On all of my trips the places where the tour company provides a meal they try to Americanize the food a little. Well the only way Spain knew how to Americanize the food was to add French Fries to the meal. Even deserts were interesting-how can you mess up a desert?

There is no place like home!! This is the first time I have felt it so strongly.

PS When I figure out how to post some pictures the way I want to post them I will do so. I just have to wait for a grandchild to help me.

Spring Break

Today all the school personnel left at the end of the day for Spring Break. Some teachers and students will be doing fun things; and some will be getting some much needed rest.

Since I retired in July, Spring Break is not as significant for me as in past years. However, I still travel with my school friends and retired school friends.

So, I will be leaving tomorrow, Saturday, March 13 for Spain. I will return on Sunday, March 21.

I wish for all my friends and family a wonderful, restful, joyful Spring Break.

February is fast drawing to a close...It will be March before we know it...a day and a half.

I have enjoyed retirement soooooooooo very much. However, this past week I had two full days of errands to accomplish. I felt like I was back at work by the time I got home at night. I got my Swine Flu shot and I got my hair permed. I am trying to get all my duck in a row before my spring trip. It is amazing how paper filing can get the best of you, but I am getting there. I am trying to get caught up with my reading and return all my library books. Oh, don't forget there is laundry and dirty dishes that have to be taken care of.

I have spent time this past few days communicating with my high school class mates trying to find pictures from my home town to include in my story.

Today is a beautiful day. The sun is shinning and the dogs are enjoying it very much. I am enjoying being lazy to some degree.

February 24, 2010...what happened to the time between July 31, 2009 and now. I started out keeping a journal...that went by the way side...now I may go back to blogging and try to keep that up...I do better on a computer than with pencil and paper.

Currently I am writing my life's story for my kids and my grand kids and my great grand kids. I have talked about this for a long time that I needed to do it and I jotted down notes, but never started writing. I woke up this past Monday morning with a good idea for a start and plan to follow. I have been working on it ever since in all my spare time. I have time line charts and notes and I am trying to pull it all together and start filling in the blanks. I have also been on a mission trying to find pictures--I really want a picture of the house where I was born. So far I have not found it.

I will try to do better at keeping up this blog.
